Specialist employment lawyers in London and the South East, advising employers on equality and discrimination issues.

Promoting equality and preventing discrimination at work.

At Thomas Mansfield Solicitors, we support employers across the UK – from those headquartered in London and the South East to organisations with national and international teams – to navigate the complexities of the Equality Act 2010 and wider employment law.

Recognised in The Legal 500, Lexcel accredited and members of the Employment Lawyers Association, our employment law solicitors bring deep legal knowledge and commercial insight to every matter. We make it easy for employers to engage with us, offering flexible, accessible advice – and practical training – that works in the real world.

We advise across sectors including financial services, transport and logistics, and professional services, helping businesses manage risk, respond to complaints, and develop forward-thinking strategies that reflect their values.

Your legal obligations under the Equality Act 2010

The Equality Act 2010 protects individuals from unfair treatment based on certain protected characteristics. As an employer, you’re responsible for upholding these protections – and accountable if you don’t.

The nine protected characteristics are:

  • Age.
  • Disability (including neurodivergent conditions such as autism, ADHD and dyslexia).
  • Gender reassignment.
  • Marriage and civil partnership.
  • Pregnancy and maternity.
  • Race (including colour, nationality and ethnic or national origin).
  • Religion or belief.
  • Sex.
  • Sexual orientation.

These protections apply throughout employment – from recruitment and onboarding through to redundancy and dismissal. Our team helps employers apply the law confidently and fairly, ensuring that your internal processes align with legal requirements.

Handling discrimination complaints and investigations.

Allegations of discrimination or harassment can arise suddenly – often through informal concerns that escalate quickly or attract external attention. We act swiftly and sensitively to help you manage these situations in line with your legal obligations.

We support employers by:

  • Advising on internal complaints and grievances involving discrimination.
  • Drafting sensitive but robust responses to employees or representatives.
  • Guiding disciplinary and grievance procedures to avoid procedural pitfalls.
  • Conducting or supporting independent workplace investigations.
  • Advising on communications, reputational considerations and team dynamics.
  • Representing employers in Acas early conciliation and employment tribunal proceedings.

Our equality & discrimination solicitors act with discretion and clarity, understanding the legal, commercial and human aspects of these issues.

Creating inclusive policies that work in practice

Policies alone don’t create an inclusive workplace – but they’re a crucial foundation. We work closely with employers to review and update internal policies and practices so they genuinely support equality and reduce legal risk. This often includes support around reasonable adjustments and inclusive policy development for neurodivergent staff, ensuring your approach is fair, practical and legally compliant.

Our services include:

  • Drafting and reviewing equal opportunities and anti-harassment policies.
  • Aligning contracts and staff handbooks with discrimination law.
  • Building structured, unbiased recruitment and appraisal processes.
  • Advising on reasonable adjustments and return-to-work support.
  • Implementing fair performance and capability procedures.
  • Supporting HR and leadership teams to create long-term equality strategies.

We take time to understand your organisation’s structure and workforce, ensuring the solutions we recommend are tailored and realistic.
